We went straight out of the church and down the cobbled street to the Black bull We will not be the first people to do this and certainly not the last.....Haworth is laid out that way and at some point in your journey you will end up at this pub. It is inevitable. I bet a lot never made it to the church either.
The black bull was the now famous watering hole of Branwell Bronte the wayward brother of the Bronte sisters who lived with their father the vicar at the old parsonage that we had visited earlier.
This pub is not "just haunted" it is very very haunted.
It has stood on this site for 300 years and was the original meeting place of The Freemasons. Branwell Bronte became secretary after being invited to join at the age of 19. There is a chair on the landing ....the mason's chair and this was Branwell Bronte's seat.
The pub also owns a print of Branwell's famous portraits of his sisters....the one where he painted himself out because of a family ruck. This was over a manuscript for Wuthering Heights which he claimed to have written. Emily was accused of stealing this from him and editing it as her own.
There is a light above this picture. every morning it is found turned around. The pub has many ghosts and sounds heard frequently by regulars. mumbling words, stuff being moved, smells of cigar smoke......figures appearing......
At the top of the hill not very far away at all is the old grave yard. It has over 50,000 bodies encased ...over time it is said that these bods slid down as subsidence set in and these bodies are now under the Black bull pub.
Any way....it is a lovely traditional old pub with lovely traditional ghosts and stories attached and I wanted to go here for coffee........We had earlier on the way up to the parsonage discovered that Lee had left his wallet behind at home. My last bit of change was used as parking money in the machine for an hour! so there is no way that was happening on this visit,
Lee used to live not far from here and this was one of his local pubs too . Branwell Bronte drunk himself into a stupor every day and was transported home on a cart for his sisters to deal with.
He also had a Laudanum addiction . This old place was Rose and co. an apothecary where he bought his Laudanum.... It is now a museum also.....kept in the style that it would have been in Branwell Bronte's day....
So yes I really wanted to go inside. But I can save that for another visit when we remember some proper money. I saw no caspoints anyway!
Here is a link to a very informative site all about ghosts and what not at the Black bull in Haworth.

So we had no money. No wallet and no plastic cards. We also had no internet access on the mobile phone. So we went down the old high street down the cobbled street to the bottom and back.......
This is the famous part of Haworth!!! a great tourist trap where every business relates itself to the Bronte connection and tenuous links to great litary works.....
The famous view..........old Haworth with rolling hills behind......
We walked all the way down to the bottom......
Then discovered how steep it was to climb back up....
And that cars and vans use this route to the town centre........
I managed to get pictures with no cars or vans delivering to the many Bronte cafes and bed and Breakfast hotels.
As I say at some stage you end up at the Blackbull and the church. And so we did again and opposite is now
Haworth steam brewing Co. . This used to be a toy museum. a dusty old place where Lee used to live. He shared the flat above this building.....So here we are outside this bar as well.....
Just by the old sweet shop which I also had in my head to go in and buy some old sweets for the car ride home.....
Past the next pub and back to the Fonz car to try and find a cashpoint and some money to buy lunch....
There is an advert on the telly. I have vaguely noted it and then straight away forgotton it. it is the one where a young chap gives his jacket to his girlfriend to go home in one night out. After she is gone he realises that his wallet was in that jacket and he has no money. He uses his mobile phone to get a code for the cashpoint which then delivers him some money to get a taxi? that one!
Well that is pretty much what we had to do too. only Haworth has rotten mobile phone signal, so we drove to Keighley with me watching the mobile until 3G came up in the info bar at the top. !!!!!
We found a bank and got new crisp notes.
So that was one hour in Haworth. I will be returning as none of the shops were open anyway and I really do need to get myself inside the Blackbull ......
